Business Tip: Communicating Changing Business Hours & Closures
Have you ever tried to make a reservation at a restaurant for that evening, only to find out that the restaurant is closed for a private event? Or have you ever made plans with friends for the upcoming weekend and show up at the location to find the door locked with a note on the door reading, "We're closed for the holiday!" Yep, us too.
As a business, it’s essential to ensure smooth communication with your customers regarding any changes in your store hours or closures. These changes in hours could be the result of holidays, special events, buyouts, repairs or bigger construction projects, or a much-deserved vacation. We understand things come up, but regardless of the reason, it's imperative to communicate effectively.
Here are a few tips to keep your customers and guests informed:
1. Update your website and social media profiles with the latest hours.
This can look differently for everyone depending on your website design and how you utilize your social media accounts. Our advice is to place the update in a high traffic area. If you have the ability to create a special pop-up when someone visits your website, that's an effective option that won't be missed by patrons.
2. Consider sending out an email newsletter or text message to your loyal customers about any changes.
Or both! If this closure or change in business hours caught you off guard, a text message might be more appropriate. If placing the updated hours in your weekly newsletter, you might keep the information running for a few weeks to ensure a larger number of readerships. Do you only send a newsletter once a month? Maybe consider sending a special newsletter specifically announcing the updated hours in the middle of the month or closer to when those new hours take effect.
3. Put up visible signs in-store as much in advance to remind customers of upcoming closures or adjusted hours.
We suggest placing this signage in multiple areas! The front door or window is a great start, but we suggest adding signage near the cash register and on the service counter. A menu on the wall that can be easily edited, such as a chalkboard or marquee, would be a great spot where customers can see the information while browsing your selections. Another great option is to add small tabletop tents to dining tables.
4. Utilize social media platforms to post reminders and updates regularly.
Regardless of your business, social media is a powerful tool in keeping your customers up to date. Similar to newsletters, post the announcement of new hours or a closure frequently on all of your social media channels. Just adding the information to your profile will not ensure the proper reach to loyal and new customers.
Utilizing a combination of all of these forms of communication will ensure everyone is up to date! Clear communication helps build trust and keeps everyone on the same page.
